How do we support youth experiencing climate anxiety?

The Teens (Re-)Storying the Creek with STEM (T-ReCS) project aims to address youths’ climate anxiety through place-based learning and digital storytelling as students investigate Nashville’s Mill Creek as a socio-ecological system.

We examine how digital storytelling with augmented reality (AR), zines (short for magazines), and podcasts could help connect youth with their STEM identities and the environment as we empower youth as agentic creators rather than media consumers.

T-ReCS Project Goals:

#1. Nurture youths’ place-based learning through field science and storytelling.

#2. Increase youths’ identification with STEM professionals who study and mitigate environmental degradation.

#3. Create and refine a theoretical model of STEM identity play.
